For two years, Lucas has been a single guy. His high-school sweetheart wife cheated on him and left on a string of words like unreliable, disappointing, and failure. Then an old childhood friend moves back next door, only now she’s a woman. And single. And ignoring him.

When her irritating neighbor disrupts her night, Trina’s late for an early morning interview. If she can’t land this job, she can’t afford to go back to school. When Lucas pops up again, she takes his peace offering. Pretend to date him and she’ll get the job.

They both know the deal. It should be no problem. But the bigger the glimpse she gets into his lonely life, the more she wants to be a part of it—at the risk of her own damaged heart. And the more he learns about her plans and ambitions, the more he knows his ex-wife was right—he has nothing to offer.

Rancher Next Door seemed like the perfect book for me, western, childhood best friends to second chance love, but unfortunately, this book was not for me, the characters didn't talk to me, I struggled with the relationship between Lucas and Trina when it was clear that Lucas was still not over the abuse he suffered and it just didn't mesh. I wanted to give this book a chance, but it just failed badly for me the 3 times I tried to read it.

Unfortunately, I did give up on this book, so it’s a DNF from me.

Marie Johnston is a RITA® Finalist, and a best-selling and award-winning writer of paranormal and contemporary romance – and an avid reader of them both.
Several years ago, when kids started outnumbering adults in the house, Marie Johnston left her job as a public health microbiologist to stay at home. Settling into working part-time and shuttling kids around gave Marie the opportunity to think about what she wanted to be when she grew up. A die-hard science geek, she explored her previously thought to be non-existent creative side after much time spent making snowman crafts and coloring princesses. Having entertained thoughts of writing a book one day then subsequently deciding it would be too hard, she finally put the figurative pen to paper and began to type – and fell in love with storytelling.
The Sigma Menace is the first series by Marie with Fever Claim being her first book EVER.  She is humbled by the fact that people are willing to read to her books and looks forward to keeping readers entertained for many years.
Marie lives with her husband and four kids in the Upper Midwest where the summers are gorgeous, the winters are brutal, and spring and fall are luxuries.
